Hamptons and the East End of Long Island
East Hampton's "Main Beach" is #9 among the country's top 10 beaches of 2005, according to Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman (authority on the subject). Ranking up there with beaches in Kauai and Mauii (Hawaii), he rates his top ten list based on annual data that he and his colleagues at the Laboratory for Coastal Research collect using a list of 50 different criteria from seaweed to sand color, wind speed to cleanliness. So with beaches like Main Beach just 106 miles from Manhattan, it's no wonder the Rich and Famous call the Hamptons their playground. If not the beaches it must be the beautiful views or the abundance of things to do...

Getting there...you can travel that 106 miles on the Long Island Expressway if you've got a car, or you can take the Hampton Jitney and work on your laptop as you make your commute. The Jitney has a wireless internet connection the whole way from Manhattan to all stops East via Wi-Ran, a wireless rolling internet connection. (it's very cool!)
Where will you stay when you get there? There are Hotels, Bed and Breakfast Inns, etc... or you can rent a condo or time share. Renting a house for the week is a popular way to go, but make sure you make your plans early to get a nice place. Don't expect to find many bargains.
What to do? There are so many things to do in the Hamptons and on the East End of Long Island that it's hard to list just a few without feeling like I left something important out. You've got the Beaches (as I mentioned), you can stroll through one of the adorable (and ritzy) villages of Westhampton Beach, Southampton, Easthampton, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, or Amagansett. You can travel a little farther east to Montauk. Take the ferry to Shelter Island. Museums, Galleries, Antique Shops, and Vineyards dot both "Forks" and you can shop till you haven't got a penny left.
