Beaches of Long Island

According to Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman of the Laboratory for Coastal Research, "Coopers Beach" in Southampton, New York ranks #3 out of Americas Top 10 beaches of 2006, East Hampton's "Main Beach" ranks #6 (up from #9 last year).

Ranking up there with beaches in Hawaii, California and Florida, his rankings are based on criteria from seaweed to sand color, wind speed to cleanliness. Long Island is bordered by hundreds of miles of beach. Some of it beautiful clean white sandy beach and some of it scenic pebble covered clear sound side beaches. Make sure to bring water shoes if you want to enjoy the beaches on the North Shore. The water is clear and calm - but no sand under foot. I prefer the North Shore beaches like Asheroken and Crab Meadow to the South Shore beaches like Jones Beach. They are much less crowded, the water is glorious and the sunsets are amazing.

Some Long island beaches are open to Residents only, some are open to residents but a daily pass if permitted for non residents and all of the State run beaches are open to the public. They all will require some type of daily fee or pass between Labor Day and Memorial Day. It's best to call ahead if you're from out of town.

Getting there...If you are going to the beaches of the East End (Hamptons, Montauk, etc...) You can get there via the Long Island Expressway if you've got a car, or you can take the Hampton Jitney. The Jitney now offers Wi-Ran, a wireless rolling internet connection. (it's very cool!) so you can work on your laptop as you make your way out to the sun and fun without the traffic hassle.

All over Long Island you can find Hotels, Motels, and Bed and Breakfast Inns.
