Pet Services on Long Island
So I used to believe all the bunk that they spout about the animal shelters and how irresponsible we all are because we don't have our animals spayed and neutered. I used to believe these statistics that the animal rescue organizations spout:
- 25% of pet dogs put to sleep in animal shelters are purebred.
- Over 7 million pet dogs and cats are put to sleep each year due to overpopulation.
- Adopting a dog or cat from a humane society, an animal shelter,
an SPCA, or a dog rescue or cat rescue group will save it's life!
After spending the last month trying to adopt a dog from any local shelter - I have a different opinion now. In the last month I have been driven to such frustration that I have decided to purchase a puppy from a dreaded "puppy mill" - Let me tell you my story.
We decided to rescue a dog that needs a home so we went to the Huntington Animal Control. There was very little there. "Where were all the desperate dogs?" I asked. The nice gentleman told me that there are not too many dogs just "found on the street", that's a fallicy he told me.
The few dogs that were there were mostly pit bulls - and most of them were "confiscated" during raids. Not one of them passed the temperment test so all of them were headed for euthanasia. Even if I wanted to adopt one of these poor dogs they would not allow me to.
There was one Jack Russel terrier, but get this - the Jack Russel rescue organization gets first dibs. So I couldn't have him unless I went through the rescue organization. I'll tell you about that next.
That left one poor scared poodle looking dog sitting in her cage shaking like a leaf. "Can we adopt her?" I asked. No apparently she just came in and must wait one week to see if her owner claims her. That's fair, I thought. "Can we hold her and meet with her?" No. So we poked our fingers through the chain link and tried to talk to her but she was just so scared we didn't get very far.
So for the next week my daughter called every day and asked about 'Suzy' as she named her. Suzy was set to be temperment tested on Saturday and if she passed we could adopt her. On Saturday she called again to find that because Suzy had not eaten all week (big suprise - would you eat if you were in jail?) - she could not be temperment tested and we had to wait until next Saturday. We said we would take Suzy without the temperment testing and take our chances that a four pound ball of fluff would kill us in our beds. No, that's not allowed. If Suzy doesn't pass temperment testing she will be put to sleep. By this time my 12 year old daughter was beside herself.
So I decided to look on petfinder for a young, small dog that is in a rescue situation. I was startled to find that I am the scum of the earth and not fit to rescue a dog. Why? Well because I asked innocently enough for the puppy not to be spayed. Or at least that's how they made me feel. Hmmm, I have birthed children, have a nice home, have owned many animals in the past. But nope - I'm scum and unless I tell them the balance in my bank account, the number of animals I have had in my lifetime and how each one of them died - furnishing the birth and death certificates and a letter from my vet - no way were they going to give me the time of day. OK I am exaggerating a little bit - but really this was becoming such a frustrating endeavor, and my daughter was becoming so disillusioned with the process.
The irony is - in their effort to be part of the solution - they have become part of the problem. How so? Simple. That we have decided that all the NAZI rescue organizations could go scratch and we are now purchasing a dog - with it's reproductive organs untouched - from a puppy store.
