Travel on and off Long Island

Getting Ready for that summer vacation? The Long Island Connection is here to help. Our members can help you find just the right destination, book a flight, rent a car, choose the perfect Hotel, Inn or B&B.

Before you go do some online research. This is where our Google Search can really help you out. Do searches tolearn as much as you can about your destination. Start a "Travel Notebook". Open a Notepad or Word document and copy and paste things that you think are noteworthy in one handy place.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Don't forget to include taxes and tips in your travel budget. Many destinations charge additional taxes for travel related services.
  • Check the weather before you go so you can pack accordingly.
  • Check to see what type of documentation you will need to travel.
  • Find out what types of vaccinations you will need to enter the country, there may also be medications you’ll need to take before, during and after your trip.
  • Check your own medical coverage to see what type of coverage you’ll have when away from home. Consider purchasing travel insurance.
  • Carry your medication in their original bottles to help avoid security questions. Bring along at least twice as much as you think you will need in case your trip is extended or flights are delayed.
  • If you have any questionable drugs or particularly large supplies, you might want to bring a letter from your doctor stating you have a legal right to use these drugs.
  • If you are traveling outside of the U.S., check to see what you can legally take with you. Something legal here might be illegal elsewhere.
  • If you're taking a road trip, get your car serviced before you go.
  • If you're leaving the country, find out if you will need a passport to enter the country. Make sure your passport is up to date and valid. Did you know... that some countries will not admit you if your passport will expire within six months?
  • Some countries require a visa in additon to a passport. Check to see if you'll need a visa.
  • Check with the U.S. State Department concerning safety warnings for U.S. touristsand WorldTravelWatch.com at your destination. There are advisories for many countries that you may not be aware of.
  • Check the financial section of your newspaper, they usually post exchange rates and checking in advance can give you an idea of how much you’ll need to budget. Or use our handy currency converter here:

  • Most of the world uses the metric system, and if you're like me you were out sick the day Miss Lowell covered that subject. Put this info on a cheat sheet and put it in your wallet: 1 kilometer = .62 miles so 100 kilometers per hour = 62 miles per hour.
  • Here's another important safety tip - Don’t leave keys “hidden” outside your home. Leave an extra key with a trusted neighbor or colleague if you must.
  • And don't tell any strangers you're going away - that includes the paper delivery or the mail unless you are really friendly with the mail carrier and the paper "boy" - who knows how far the word that you're out of town will travel. Have a trusted neighbor pick up your paper and mail and check for any deliveries by the front door for you. This will ensure that the house is looked after daily too.
  • One last thing - do not put valuables in your checked luggage, they are safer in your carry-on bags and even safer at home.

Things you should carry with you:

  • A passport, for all travel outside the U.S. and identification purposes
  • Wallet
  • Driver’s License or Government issued ID card
  • Insurance cards for both your medical and automobile insurance
  • Credit cards
  • Travelers checks
  • Coupons
  • Airline, Cruise or Train tickets
  • Itinerary with confirmation numbers and addresses and the phone numbers of where you’ll be staying.
  • One-dollar bills for tipping.
  • A small amount of local currency.

And it's always a good idea to have one change of clothes in your carry on in case your checked luggage winds up someplace on another flight to who knows where.
